Dopo il silenzio
Cosa farò con il silenzio
quando le lettere da Latina
non cadranno più nella mia cassetta?
Incontrandoci per soli due giorni a Cavriglia
come abbiamo potuto corrispondere
con tanta enfasi per decenni
se non fosse stato per qualcosa
più grande di noi stessi?
Ero una bambina quando lavoravate
sulle barriere di Churchill
mai attraversandole finché voi
cessaste di essere prigionieri di guerra
e rimpatriaste nella vostra Italia nativa.
Il nostro reciproco amore per la Chiesetta
in Lamb Holm ci saldò in un legame
che la morte potrà attenuare ma non distruggere.
Poi i dolci, caldi venti
che soffiano sui boschetti di olivo
ed il gelido vento che lambisce Lamb Holm
saranno una cosa sola.

After the Silence
What shall I do with the silence
when no more letters from Latina
drop through my letter box?
Meeting for only two days in Cavriglia,
how can we have corresponded
with such empathy for decades
had it not been for something
greater than ourselves?
I was a child when you laboured
on the Churchill Causeways,
never crossing over them unti I you
had ceased to be a prisoner-of-war,
repatriated to your native Italia.
Our mutuai love for the Chiesetta
in Lamb Holm welded us in a bond
which death may lessen but not sever.
Then the soft, warm winds
that blow over the olive groves
and the icy gusts around Lamb Holm
will be as one.
